Design and Technology

Department Overview

Design and Technology is about problem-solving. It involves learning to complete an iterative design process which begins with identifying a problem, researching that problem, developing ideas around possible solutions, realising the best solution, and then evaluating the success of the solution.

This process involves skill development with a variety of workshop tools, processes and techniques, combined with modern advancements in design technology, such as computer aided design, 3-D printers and laser cutters.

Design and Technology at Biddenham seeks to develop our students’ practical skills through a range of projects in wood, metal and plastics. We also aim to develop a wide variety of soft-skills such as problem solving, time management, idea creation, analytical and evaluative skills through the written and drawn elements of the lessons. As students work through the lessons, they will learn how to sketch in 3D, produce 3D digital and practical models and produce beautiful practical outcomes.

Students are encouraged at every step to consider their social and environmental impact. Sustainability is a fundamental element of the course.
