Bronze Duke of Edinburgh – year 10 Expedition

Dear Parent/Carer

Your child has been undertaking their Skill, Practical and Volunteering section for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award since September and have already completed most of these. To gain their Bronze Award they must complete the expedition section. The requirement for this is to complete one day of pre expedition training, one practice expedition and a two day assessed expedition with a night of camping.

We are running the following sessions in the build up to this to ensure they are fully prepared:

Wednesday 12th June – First Aid and Basics of the Expedition. Students will be in school but off timetable, learning a variety of skills to ensure that they can overcome any issues whilst in the field.
Monday 24th June – Practice walk from school, putting up a tent and cooking on the stoves on school grounds. A pre expedition check of all equipment/packed items will be completed.
Thursday 27th – Friday 28th June – Real expedition. This will involve two days of walking with one overnight camping. Students will need to be self-sufficient throughout this time and will need to carry food with them.

Equipment – Students are more than welcome to use their own equipment whilst on expedition, however we have managed to acquire some expedition equipment which we are willing to loan out to students. It will be the responsibility of students to ensure that the equipment comes back to us
as it was given to them. If you require anything from the list attached please let us know and we will try to accommodate this. We have tents and cooking equipment which we will be providing to all groups.

This year we are running the assessed expedition locally to Leslie Sell Activity Centre, this will be at a cost of £15.00.

Please provide parental consent and payment via ParentPay no later than 12th June to secure your child’s place on the expedition.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me,
