Students from Biddenham School have been tackling social issues by supporting local charities as part of a Programme provided by educational charity First Give.
The Programme has seen students in Year 7 who have been exploring their ‘Belonging’ topic by getting out into the community and finding out what they can do to make a difference, which has involved researching charities in the local area, visiting these charities to learn about the work they do and producing presentations which include a creative performance, budgeting and a wide variety of knowledge about them. The best teams from each class participating in the Programme progressed to the School Final to compete for first, second and third prizes of £1,000, £250 and £250 for their charities.
Mr Bailey, the Headteacher of Biddenham School has commented “ This is a tremendous scheme and a key part of our innovative transitional curriculum allowing our students to learn new key skills whilst helping others. Needless to say we are proud of them all”.
On the 19th April the seven week Programme culminated as the top teams in the year group competed to see who demonstrated the most dedication to their charity and originality in their presentation and the winners of the grants were announced.
The charities represented in the final were very close to our students hearts They were: Faces, Aquairus, Bedford daycare centre, Prebend Day Care , YMCA and Chums. We are pleased to announce that the runners up were Faces and Bedford Day Care and the winners were YMCA . All students have shown such drive and commitment to the community which really emphasises the ethos we hold here at Biddenham.
