Food and Child Development

This is a very friendly and supportive department which works hard to give as much help and support to the students as possible. Students are given time and encouragement to develop their practical skills and explore their creativity. 

Department Information 

There is a purpose built food room with 20 fully equipped stations and a dedicated, well stocked, textile room for students to be able to explore subjects to the full. In addition to timetabled hours we offer catch-up sessions after school each week. This allows students to revisit what they have learnt and either improve or catch-up on their controlled assessed assignments.
In Food at least 50% of the time is devoted to students developing and practising their practical skills. We have a fully equipped kitchen and students are encouraged try out new dishes and styles. 


We study Catering at GCSE where the emphasis is on learning basic cooking skills, nutrition and diet. 60% of the final mark is achieved by completing two controlled assessments, one in year 10 and the second in year 11.
We also have a dedicated child development classroom which has a bank of computers for students to use when completing their work

In Art and Design Textiles students are able to explore a range of techniques and materials to design and create a range of products in areas such as fashion, interiors and constructed textiles. They are also directed to look and reflect at the work of other artists and designers to further motivate and inspire their work. There is no written exam at the end of the course; instead the students will work on a final piece under exam conditions.
